2012.09.22 The Cure - Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me

Color: Black

Released: 1987, May 25

Label: Elektra/Fiction

I’ll post this record today loosely in honor of my friends Grant and Valerie, who got married today. “Just Like Heaven” was played during their reception and I think going forward, listening to this record (at least when that song comes on) will remind me of them and the great time had at their wedding. Completing my Cure vinyl collection has been and will continue to be somewhat of an arduous process. Some records I may wait for a reissue similar Disintegration. Others, I’m always on the lookout for. And this happened to be next on my list. That is until I snagged a used copy of this about a month ago. Where Disintegration stays focused on mood, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me successfully portrays two facets of The Cure. The brooding beast and beautiful pop machine. It’s interesting that this record came before Disintegration, and that that record’s follow up, Wish, would see the band return to this schizophrenic type of approach. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me is not be missed. It’s the album that seemed to finally bring the band the well-deserved attention that had escaped them until this point and a number of its songs remain staples of the band’s live set, even in recent years. The album artwork veers towards creepy in the best way that seems to be fitting for The Cure. That huge eyeball on the back is a bit unnerving. And if the title of the record didn’t drive the point home enough, the huge red lips should seal the deal.
