2012.09.13 Bundy K. Brown, Doug Scharin, James Warden - Directions In Music

Color: Black

Released: 1996 (2012 Reissue)

Label: Thrill Jockey

Yes. Yes. YES! Thank GOD for Thrill Jockey reissuing this on vinyl! This is classic Chicago “post rock”. Not the “post rock” that you may be thinking. But the kind of innovative stuff that was coming out when the term was first being kicked around. We all know that labels are silly… but bands like Tortoise (which Bundy Brown was once a member of) were making noise that kind of forced a new term to try and classify the sounds they were producing. So we have this classic record featuring drummer extraordinaire Doug Scharin (June of 44, Rex, Codeine, etc) which seems like a reaction to Tortoise going a more electronic experimental route. Interestingly, some electric or experimental textures find their way into this record. Accessible and challenging at the same time, the first time I listened this I was hooked. I discovered this a bit too late and never owned an official copy of this. I do remember for some time longing for a vinyl copy of it. Recently that longing resurfaced and then it seemed like only hours later that I read the announcement that Thrill Jockey were reissuing this. As big of a fan as I usually am of large bold type, I love that the type on the artwork here is so small and minimal. I also like the way the label on the A side of the wax mirrors the front cover image and the back cover image is found on the B side of the vinyl. Super duper classic stuff that will remain an all time favorite and I could not be more thrilled to own in on vinyl.
