2012.08.21 The Lassie Foundation - Pacifico

Color: Black
Released: 2000, October 31
Label: Shogun / Grand Theft Autumn
This an ode to cruising the used bins. Sometimes you see a record from your past for real cheap and it reminds you of a specific time and place or maybe just an era in general of your formative years (musically speaking of course). So you think to yourself “What the hell…” and then you’re marching towards the checkout counter with said record tucked under your arm. I found this Lassie Foundation record at Criminal a few years back and added it to my collection. “LSF” were made up of members of Starflyer 59, Cush and a few other fine southern Californian bands. Initially it was obvious that they loved My Bloody Valentine and The Beach Boys in equal amounts. By the time this record came out it seemed they were coming into their own nicely (even though the album features a few tracks reworked from previous EPs). This record definitely reminds me of visiting friends in SoCal and the period in which I considered relocating to California. (Whew! Oh… no offense to my West Coast friends… just don’t see how that would have worked out in retrospect.) The illustration on the front cover lends itself to a vintage children’s book illustration. The playfulness of the type is another highlight and I like the way “The” is tucked between the L and A of “LASSIE.”
